I started watching every Nitro and PPV from the beginning in 2021 and I wouldn’t recommend it. 1995 WCW was absolutely atrocious. Hulk Hogan is at peak Cody Rhodes AEW unironic zero self awareness babyface and it’s terrible. Hogan can’t wrestle for shit, he’s used the same lines in every promo for 15 years at this point, and he only wants to do storylines with his friends. I remember there’s a point here where the man best knows as Brutus Beefcake is feuding with Hogan one week as the Zodiac, and like 2 weeks later debuts to HELP HOGAN now named THE BOOTY MAN. I don’t have to be an ass man (shoutout billy gunn) to know that is a terrible name and makes no sense. I remember reading the Observer from the time and it said the turn was because Hogan wanted to be able to drink with Brutus on the road and they couldn’t do that if they’re on opposite sides of the face/heel divide, because this is pre-montreal so they still cared about that sort of thing. There are some positives here though. This is where the Cruiserweights started getting their feet in the ground. Seeing guys like Eddie Guerrero, Chris Benoit, Alex Wright, Dean Malenko, among others get some time on one of the biggest wrestling shows in the world was nice. They somehow get less time than AEW’s women’s division (the bar is in hell) but still make their mark. Best matches of these shows. Marc Mero also shows out quite a bit before he bolts to the Fed in in ‘96. There’s also some really bizarre moments that I didn’t know about until I saw them here. Giant Haystacks in particular. The man was nearly 50, weighed upwards of 400 fucking pounds, and was putting on some of the worst matches i’ve ever seen for 3 weeks before he got diagnosed with cancer and abruptly retired. Absolute legend. Rest in peace. Overall I do not regret the time I spent watching the Nitros of 1995, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Just watch reliving the war on youtube. It’s a lot better for getting a grasp of what WCW did on a weekly basis than watching any of the dogshit revisionist history documentaries the Fed puts out nowadays. History is written by the winner yadayada, stop lying Vince.
