Poster for The Oscars
The best Oscars Night since La La Land and Moonlight debacle. I really enjoyed the humour and comedy by the three hosts this year. Genuinely funny, although some of the jokes did seem a bit too sharp (as I assume some in the industry are prone to sensitivity). However, I’m glad they didn’t water-down the comedy for the sake of protecting the industry since I thoroughly enjoyed and appreciated them. The stage design and orchestra was amazing. I enjoyed the majority of the musical interludes. That ‘wtf moment’ with Will Smith definitely woke me up since I was watching this at 3:30 AM. Initially, I was shocked then flooded by negative emotions and thoughts. However, his speech came from a very real and authentic place in himself that I stopped feeling as negatively towards what unfolded, and appreciated his sincere comments on masculinity and societal pressures. In terms of awards given, I feel fine or meh towards some whilst being happy for others. I don’t have any major qualms with the awards but I do with some of the nominations. (Although, it really isn’t as bad as other years’ nominations and/or awards). I know some may be against award season or have their own (unknowingly self-interested) rhetoric/ideals about the Oscars. However, I believe award season is what cements the immortalisation of art and provides legacy for future audiences. Of course, there is more nuance and layers to that discussion but I enjoy a celebration of merits. I disagree with tainting merits with political agendas or its removal; the Oscars is a classy event that showcases ‘glitz n glamour’ and awards promote meritocracy.
