production wise, it’s incredibly hard to achieve what has been done with this show. 

the line between reality tv and docuseries has never been this blurred before, and this season of CHEER explores that better than anything i’ve seen so far. it’s fascinating for the producers to try and contend with the fact that their show brought to light all the darkness in navarro’s history, as well as created new problems by shining a spotlight on a team that was once worth celebrating. 

i’m interested to see how the show’s characters reckon with the real-life consequences or feedback on their actions, or how they’ll react or change course following the release of this season. because unlike a typical “reality show,” this “drama” is not played up to hype up a next season. these are real people, and their real lives are being impacted, but they still exist in this liminal space where public perception defines them. 

you can’t pick and choose what parts of fame and infamy you get to have, and coming from nothing makes you jump at opportunities that may not bode well in the long run. lexi’s cameo price doubled after the show’s premiere, and that’s definitely not a coincidence. 

i think this season was an incredible feat of television, but i hope - for the sake of all involved - we never have to see something like this again.
