Poster for jeen-yuhs: A Kanye Trilogy
Kanye West is the definition of genius and madness. In the first part we get to see a Kanye that viewers probably doesn’t know yet. Coodie accompanied Kanye West with his camera for over 20 years. Whatever exactly he was feeling, it was strong enough for Coodie to abandon his own career, to follow West. At a time when Kanye is working as a successful producer. He is requested by all kinds of artists for his beats. But his real dream is to rap himself. Numerous empty promises and the ridicule of many follow. Emblematic of this is a scene where Kanye barges into Rock a Fella offices. He had come to convince the label to finally give him a record deal as a solo artist. He plays his song All Falls Down to some employees. They just stare at him in disbelief and confusion. Unheard and disappointed, he leaves the building at the end. In his hand a few cds that he has taken from the office. One of them is The Blueprint by Jay-Z. The album that he half produced. We see him with his (sadly already deceased) mother Donda. The most important person in his life. He dedicated his latest album to her in 2021. She examines his new necklace (an angel) "You need an angel to watch over you," she says. Donda rapping lines her son wrote ages ago but never released. You can feel the love between son and mother in every scene. As a fan of Kanye I found this first part incredibly strong. An exceptional musical talent with incredible passion, convinced of his abilities, that never makes him give up. When do you ever get such an up-close look into the beginnings of an artist. Unfiltered and authentic. It seems amusing in retrospect when you consider what we got for an album with The College Dropout and how hard he had to fight for someone to even offer him a record deal. I'm curious what they will show in the other two parts.
